But what about the Souvenir Shops?
What about the souvenir shops then?
Australia has hundreds perhaps thousands of tourist souvenir shops. Cairns alone must have twenty or so.
Any souvenir shop that you walk into has loads of junk for sale, didgeridoos made in Thailand, stuffed toy kangaroos made in China, Aussie flags made in Taiwan, and of course, kangaroo body parts made into backscratchers and tobacco pouches.

Small kangaroo and wallaby skins are sold for floor mats, or wall hangings. Most of the kangaroos that size would not have even bred yet.
What can we do about it? Not much.

Many of Australia’s souvenir shops are owned by persons of doubtful background. Many are new Australians. Some owners have been found to have links to organised crime.

It has been suggested that wildlife groups could protests outside such shops. It would be very dangerous procedure, given the background of some of the owners.
Several meetings with the wildlife groups have found that it would be much better to concentrate on stopping the kill, then the souvenir trade in kangaroo body parts stops too!
