How the ACT government wants to kill the Majura kangaroos to make way for Airport development!
On Wednesday the 15th April 2009, about 30 protestors gathered outside the ACT Legislative Assembly to protest against the culling of kangaroos in the Australian Capital Territory.
The ACT Government plans to kill kangaroos on defence land at Majura, claiming the kangaroos are overcrowded.
The demonstrators say kangaroos are native animals and should not be considered a pest and they have seen no evidence of starving kangaroos at the site. Animal Liberation ACT president Bernard Brennan says human activity is to blame for the destruction of native grasslands. "To blame the kangaroo for the poor condition of our grasslands is like blaming a victim for a crime," he said.
We now know that shooting the kangaroos is to make way for massive airport redevelopment, including huge storage depots, and a threelane highway to service those buildiings. The kangaroos are in the way! Protests will continue around Canberra until the ACT Government comes to it's senses. Most Canberra people love their kangaroos, and are very angry about this.
Due to drought, shooting and roadkills, mostly by trucks and semitrailers, have reduced kangaroo populations Australia wide. The ACT has some of the last significantly viable populations of kangaroos left in Australia.
