Kangaroos are in serious, serious trouble. Drought, consistent and unrelenting shooting and poisoning have grossly impacted on our wild kangaroos.
In 2001 the National Kangaroo Protection Coalition challenged the NSW Kangaroo Management Plan in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, an Authority set up to Review government decisions. We lost the Appeal, but learnt much about the devious and dishonest ways of the Australian government departments and their legal teams.
Again in 2003 we challenged the Queensland, Western Australian and South Australian Kangaroo Management Plans simultaneously.
We lost again, but many changes were made to the processes that take place before a Management Plan is approved, so we didnt lose entirely. We also discovered during cross-examination that all three States had overshot their 2003 kangaroo quotas! So much for the good management they claim to have! We keep reminding them about this, too.
In 2006 we appealed the Tasmanian Pademelon and Wallaby Management Plan.
Pademelons are harmless little animals like kangaroos, but are only about one foot tall. They only eat grass and leaves. They have become extinct on the mainland of Australia since European settlement, and now only occur in Tasmania and a couple of offshore Islands.
The Tasmanian Government wanted to shoot the pademelons and send their skins to Italy to be made into fur coats.....
They also wanted to shoot the animals with .22 rifles which we believed was a clear breach of the National Code of Practice.
We are also aware that the Federal government is currently working through the process to change the Code of Practice to accomodate the Tasmanian Management Plan!
We lost this case, but forced some more changes, and in 2007-2008 we are appeling the NSW kangaroo Mangement Plan.
Although we have wide support from the legal fraternity, it still costs a lot of money to fight for our kangaroos.
