If you thought kangaroo meat was cheaper for your pet, think again!

If you are buying kangaroo meat for your pet dog or cat because you think it’s cheaper, think again. A 400gr tin of “Whiskas” costs 90 cents or so. A 600 gram package of kangaroo meat costs $4.29! It’s a big difference.

As well as that, the label on the kangaroo meat mince package often states “This product contains beef, chicken, and kangaroo mince.”

But it doesn’t say how much of it is kangaroo meat, does it? There may only be a teaspoon full of beef or chicken, and all the rest may be kangaroo.

One kilo of dog mince (kangaroo mince) can cost $4.00. A 1.2 kilo can of good quality dog food (Pal in this case) only costs $2.60, and is far better for your dog.

Of course, prices may vary a bit from store to store.

And don’t forget the dry food. All have additives to suit your dog, no matter what his or her age is. One popular brand, called Veterinarian Hills Science Diet, has many added vitamins and minerals, and is produced in various blends for young or old dogs.

Dry and tinned dog and cat food is cooked, well cooked, and has much less chance of passing on disease to your pet, and perhaps to you, than raw meat. It’s also far more nourishing, and contains vegetables and other elements to help your pet maintain good health. Beef is killed in export abattoirs. These facilities have strict guidelines to deal with potentially diseased animals, including ante and post mortem inspections by qualified AQIS staff.

Kangaroos are killed at night in the dusty Australian outback, gutted in the field, and hung on a truck, and driven around the paddock till daylight or later. Then they go to chiller box and stay there for up to two weeks, (sometimes longer) before being loaded into a truck along with dead wild pigs, and driven several hours to a processing plant. Eventually the meat is boned and packaged and days later reaches your local supermarket or shop.

Give the kangaroo meat a miss for your pet, it’s unhealthy, environmentally unfriendly, and as renown environmentalist Milo Dunphy used to say, for every kilo of kangaroo meat consumed, at least one helpless joey has had its head bashed in on the bumper of a shooters’ four-wheel drive!

The two leading pet food companies that use kangaroo meat are Prota, based in WA, and VIP Petfoods, based in Queensland. Both supply Woolworths and Coles.

PS. The photos above were taken in a kangaroo processing plant for human consumption! If this is what they process for human consumption, what do they do they process for pet meat?
