Australian Kangaroo meat Activists Invade Russia!On the 23rd April (Australia Time) two kangaroo meat activists from Animal Lib NSW and the Wildlife Protection Assn of Australia arrived in Moscow to meet Russian kangaroo protection activists. Armed with the Press Release below, and kangaroo masks, they staged protests with local Russian groups in Moscow, and outside the Australian Embassy. So far they have had great success with the media. We cant use Russian script on this website, but positive stories warning against the consumption of kangaroo meat appeared in the newspapers below. "The kangaroo industry is responsible for the long lingering deaths of nearly 1 million young joeys each year from shock, terror, starvation and predation. A brutal toll that no other wildlife slaughter on earth has to answer to, including the controversial seal pup hunt.
"We have documented irrefutable evidence that the percentage of female kangaroos being killed is now 70%+ because the population is being decimated. This is clear evidence that the kangaroo populations are being decimated. This industry is completely out of control and must be brought to a stand still and overhauled before our national icon becomes the symbol of an international disgrace. "
Kangaroos on the streets of Moscow! Mark Pearson for The Wildlife Protection Association of Australia states: "Our investigation has revealed a major decimation in the numbers of kangaroos. We have documented in remote chillers many underweight animals and of the high numbers of females, many would not have had their first or second joey. It is deplorable and extraordinary to think our government is permitting this massacre to continue. "No other commercial meat industry for human consumption has animals hanging up for 7-10 days, in fluctuating temperatures, with faecal and other contamination on the carcasses before being processed. And then we send this overseas for food. A recipe for an international health scandal, if nothing else." Russia is the largest importer of kangaroo meat. Kangaroo offal, scraps, trimmings, and forequarter bones are fed into a crusher, and the resultant meat paste is exported to Russia and used to make salami and sausage. Some red kangaroo meat is also imported.
