URGENT, TO ALL WPAA EMAIL LISTS! 20/5/06
We have received a number of emails and phone calls about the killing of 450
or so kangaroos at Thompson’s Lake in West Australia. CALM have called in
a commercial shooter to kill them, claiming there are too many kangaroos and
they are damaging the vegetation. Also the lake has dried up considerably,
and kangaroos are getting the blame. The local Council has approved many
housing developments in the area, and they apparently have allowed residents
to put down bores that have drained the Lake!
Locals think that they (CALM) need some education about how kangaroos manage
themselves and that they don't cause damage to the environment. Some locals
have suggested the idea of sterilising males. However, in Sydney at St
Marys, where they recently tried to sterilise a couple of thousand kangas,
it was a disaster, but it could be done successfully on low numbers such as
at Thompson’s Lake. We do have to wonder why they are doing anything
though, kangas seem to be able to manage their own populations okay if left
alone. Sometimes it’s more about supplying a local kangaroo shooter with
bodies to sell.
We have suggested locals mount a letter writing campaign in local papers,
and visit the local Member and give him a hard time about it. CALM hate bad
publicity, and letters from local residents carry a lot of weight, because
local residents vote for, or against, these ratbag politicians that want to
kill everything. That tactic did stop a kill at Yanchep Golf Course a couple
of years ago. Shooting at Thompson’s Reserve took place during the week,
with some locals getting inside the Reserve at night to try to see what was
happening. We have also discovered that CALM has been approaching some of
the WA Golf Clubs to see if they want any kangaroos shot! With most of
Australia being zoned rural, Golf Clubs, Dams, Reserves and a few badly
managed National Parks are the only refuge left for our kangaroos.
A Protest is planned in Perth. For anyone wishing to take part in the
protest about the culling of our precious wildlife, kanga lovers will be in
front of Council House, Perth, (subject to a Permit to gather being granted)
by the kangaroo statues at 10am onwards on Sat 27th May. Everyone is
welcome, tell all your friends. More details about the Protest later.
Meanwhile can all our readers please email the WA authorities below. Some
more emails just might make a difference!
Animal Welfare Office (jhood@dlgrd.wa.gov.au) for Local Government, The Exe.
Director of CALM (keiranm@calm.wa.gov.au), Environment Minister
(mark-mcgowan@dpc.wa.gov.au) and the Premier wa-government@dpc.wa.gov.au and
protest about this disgusting kill.
Apparently they have shot a few, but now may have temporarily stopped to
allow the remaining kangaroos to ‘settle down’.
